So, Em phoned me drunkenly this afternoon, and I took ten minutes out of my busy work schedule to chatter to her about nothing at all. Which turned into BSG, and we got discussing theories for season 4 (which of course included our interpretation of what actually happened at the end of season 3). And I realised I've ended up discussing such theories with a lot of Hobblings recently (well, at least three...). A small amount of discussion is possible (and has taken place) in the tv thread, but it doesn't feel appropriate to swamp it.
And so I suggested that we needed a dedicated thread. Em, being drunk, obviously agreed enthusiastically. If nobody else wants to join in, fine - it's a very disposable thread. But given that this will be the last season and thus an end to purposeful speculation, given the number of Hobblings who watch it, given our own egos and the joy of going 'I told you so' later on, I feel it's worth kicking a little thread out into the cold harsh wilderness.
Obviously, it's a bit spoilery. For the sake of announcing the thread, I'll hide everything in this post. But basically, if you haven't seen BSG up to the end of season 3 (and Razor, probably), and you think you might ever watch it, then…go away. Okay, enough explanation. On with me, me me me.
I still think one of the central four characters has to be a Cylon. I don't think Roslin is, I don't think either Adama can be, so that leaves Starbuck. I'm unsure. I used to think she'd be brilliant as a Cylon, but Keppet has slightly convinced me that she's best as a flawed human rather than having an 'ooh, but I'm a cylon, so obviously I'm confused' sort of get-out. Also, it's almost too obvious now. I still think it would make very good sense of the prophecies and the 'special destiny' and all, though, as well as creating a wonderfully complicated twist to the relationships of all the central characters. Which, of course, is always good.
Either way, she will clearly be an object of some suspicion within the fleet upon her return (the trailer makes it look definite she's real, not Lee hallucinating, so I'm assuming that). My prediction for reactions…I think she will have a semi-believable explanation for her absence. Lee, after all, was the only one who saw her ship explode - others would be open to believing he was mistaken. I think…I think Adama might choose to believe her. I'm not sure, he could go either way, but his emotions might blind him a bit. Either that or the emotions of betrayal and exclusion will get him and he'll go totally the other way and refuse to look at her. But I think I think he'll believe whatever story she has. Roslin…will not. But I think may reserve judgement and just keep an eye on her. Anders is going to be so caught up in being a cylon himself that if she's an object of suspicion he might end up lashing out at her because of hating his own suspicions of himself. Or something. Lee…hmm. I think he will think she's a cylon. But I think he might kind of stick beside her despite that. Not to argue her case for Earth, not even to be all Meaningful around her any more…but just to stand up for her side if other people are accusatory. Maybe. Again though…it depends how much he personally feels betrayed by her and the possibility she might not be what he thought…and I'm never good at judging people's reactions to betrayal. Apollo seems to think along my sort of lines, though, so we'll see.
Other stuff…Tory and Tigh being second-in-command in high office is fascinating, of course. They are going to distrust each other so much and struggle to justify why. I have no idea who/what is in the Cylon fleet that they've met at the Ionian Nebula, nor what they are likely to do. Roslin going all funny just before the power cut still intrigues me, although I can't see a reason for it. Is it coincidence that her cancer reappeared at about the time Jimi Hendrix started playing in the walls? Baltar had better not be a Cylon in any way shape or form, and his storyline is really beginning to bore me now. I hope they find something interesting to do with him. I want to see Tyrol talk to Athena about how it feels to find out you're a Cylon, that would rock. Apollo and Helo should be put in joint command of something. Will Apollo be brought straight back into the fleet? I don't know. It would be nice if he weren't, but difficult to keep him in enough important scenes. Dee should go away and die somewhere. Quietly. I would like Boomer to be redeemable, but she seems a bit past it. Caprica and Athena should be joined by at least one other known Cylon starting to see the arguments for working with humanity. Probably not Cavil…
I tend to think the Final Five may have (or had) some plan or agenda beyond that of the others (which was mostly just 'kill all humans' to begin with at least). The cylon god seeming like a real and tangible being is also interesting, especially since it seems bound up with the final five. And as to Starbuck leading the human race to its destruction…well, someone has to put two and two together sooner or later and say 'hang on, maybe it's not such a great idea if we lead the Cylons straight to Earth.' I really hope, or they're all a lot dimmer than they have any right to be.
I had other thoughts and speculations...but I've forgotten them and that's plenty long enough already anyway. So…who else has a pet theory? Fire away.
