Hey guys, Just thought i'd pop in a link here you might be interested in. A review of Hobb's Dragon Keeper. I understand you're all already fans however i thought that if recommending the book to your friends and family that you might wish to pass this link on. Yes, yes, i wrote the review and i'm trying to get more hits on it because im a new writer on that site (doing book reviews and interviews with authors/artists) and the topics im doing on there are new to the magazine....

Not yet up on amazon.co.uk but if you go to the Harper Collins website you'll find it, with a brief synopsis. No page count listed, just that it will be out on March 4th, 2010.

So I was at the book store today, browsing through the fiction/sci-fi section, and this pretty hot girl came along and picked up The Dragon Keeper off the shelf and stood there and started reading through the first chapter (I assume to see if it was worth getting). What have we learned about the Rain Wilds' effect on humans that we didn't know before? How does it tie into the 'Elderling' status that Malta, Reyn and Selden have now been accorded? And what does any of it mean for our Dragon Keepers?

No plot spoilers but if you are unfamiliar with the harsh realities of the Rain Wild society (or indeed the Mountain Kingdom), you may want to wait to discover it in the book.

This book, like the Liveships and Soldier's Son, deals with characters who are unattractive by the standards set in their societies but also goes a step further to portray a society that practices infanticide based on the appearance of the new born babies.

So, The Dragon Keeper got me wondering, what is the status of women's rights in the various cultures of the RH world?

OK, so there is Chalced, where at least judging by Kyle women have very little rights, and they are there simply there for the men to take care of them.

Has Sedric just imbibed a few dragon memories and turns of thought, which will linger at the back of his mind and maybe give him a new outlook on dragons, but not much more than that? Ok so I guess it's time to open up a thread to discuss everyones views upon finishing The Dragon Keeper (unless there are any objections???)...

Upon finishing the book the first thought that struck me...and it wasn't a good one (SORRY ROBIN!!) is that the story felt entirely rushed! Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the book immensly! I know there is another book to follow but The Dragon Keepers as a stand alone book I felt could have been at least another 300 pages longer...

My heart fluttered a bit when Alise got on Paragon, and even more when she actually talked to him and speculated about the origin of his battered appearance and earring. I like how Althea, Malta and others are used as characters in the plot, but they don't sideline any of the new characters. Their usage is integral but subtle: it makes sense that they would appear where they are, given Malta's occupation as honorary Elderling, and Brashen and Althea running Paragon.

My favourite scenes are probably told from Sedric's point of view. Hobb captures his conflicts in a way that makes me relate to him even though his actions are "wrong" and I've never been in his situation before. It's even more interesting to view his character from Alise's perspective and understand all of the motivations and emotions that are boiling under his surface while Alise is largely ignorant of what's going on.
